Hi, there and welcome to The Wise Center! I’m Sam. I’m from northeastern Alabama, and my counseling journey began when I studied psychology at Birmingham-Southern College. After a brief internship at Piper Place, I knew counseling was my calling. That realization led me to Atlanta, where I continued my education in Clinical Counseling Psychology at Brenau University and started honing my skills in both community mental health and private practice settings.

In my work, I draw on my background in philosophy, blending existential, person-centered, and CBT approaches to help clients navigate challenges. I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide array of minority clients, addressing issues like depression, anxiety, trauma, gender and sexuality affirmation, personality disorders, and substance abuse.

When I’m not in the office, you’ll often find me diving into philosophy, hanging out with friends and family, listening to music, or doing what I like to call “Hozier Homework.”

Psychiatrist

I am a psychiatrist and psychotherapist who works with adolescents and adults facing a wide range of emotional and psychiatric challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, attention disorders, OCD, and personality disorders. I’m especially interested in understanding each person’s internal world and helping them make sense of patterns that may feel overwhelming or difficult to change.

In addition to my clinical work, I serve as a Clinical Senior Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center (starting July 2026), where I conduct research in bioinformatics and computational psychiatry. This work reflects my broader interest in how biology, data, and lived experience come together in mental health.

I earned my B.A. from Columbia University and my M.D. from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed my residency in Adult Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center. My training has also included advanced work in psychodynamic psychiatry at the Austin Riggs Center, where I was honored to receive the 2025 Austin Riggs Award for Excellence in Psychotherapy, as well as additional training in sports psychiatry through the International Society for Sports Psychiatry.

Hi, I’m Abby—welcome! I’m a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I’m passionate about supporting individuals as they navigate life’s challenges and move toward healing, growth, and self-understanding.

Before joining The Wise Center for DBT, I completed my graduate internship at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama. There, I had the privilege of offering psychosocial support to individuals and families coping with the stress of caring for a seriously ill child. This experience deepened my belief in the power of empathy, connection, and creating spaces where people feel truly seen and supported.

Outside of work, you can usually find me spending time with family and friends, getting lost in a good book, or catching up on the latest binge-worthy show.

Hi! I’m Lowry— I am so delighted you are here!

I am an Alabama native and received my bachelor’s and master’s in social work at the University of Alabama. Following graduate school, I moved to New York City with my best friends where I had the opportunity to practice social work in a variety of different settings including residential foster care, supportive housing, and an outpatient therapy clinic. I am licensed to practice social work in Alabama and New York!

I am deeply passionate about creating an empathetic and supportive space for you to explore anything that may be weighing on you without fear of judgement. I have extensive experience working with clients suffering from depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, eating disorders, relational issues, grief/loss, self injurious behaviors, ADHD, and life stressors. At the heart of my practice, I believe fostering a healthy relationship with yourself and others around you is key to living a fulfilling life. It would be an honor to have the opportunity to come alongside you and empower you with evidence based skills and resources to accomplish your therapeutic goals!

Outside of work, you can find me at the movie theater (I am an AMC a lister), hanging out with friends, playing with my adorable niece, and cuddling with my cat Ollie!
